I totaly think so. Unlike visual art, where the argument that the artist could be creating for the process might still have some merit. Writing I believe, if it is any good and isn't just about therapy of typing or scribbling. It's something that if even just to the self, requires: effort of precision, thinking how to be precise and perhaps even the helpful outside backboard of a mentor. Very helpful, what do you think what did I miss?
Interesting comment, Nick. I'd have to say that yes, writers need mentors BUT I think they can often be books. Before there were creative writing programs, people taught themselves to write by reading - and then by showing their work to others, whether writer friends or publishers, who can act as mentors/editors. Are you saying that visual artists can just learn from the work of others?
